Study Tours

Thursday 8 March 2012
12.30pm – 5.00pm

The 2012 study tour program has been carefully designed to ensure that you have the opportunity to take an in-depth look at projects covering a broad range of urban development. We encourage you to go to the National Congress website for more information on the developments included in the study tours.

MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITIES 1 (TOUR A)

Heading north from the CBD delegates will visit two of Perth’s major coastal masterplanned developments. Brighton is an advanced, highly awarded development with stages that reflect ongoing market requirements. Satterley Property Group, the WA based national developer, is currently developing Brighton’s Main Street and Business Centre, a vital component of the overall master-plan. This is designed as a transit orientated development linking Brighton to the CBD in around 30 minutes. Shorehaven by Peet Limited is fresh on the scene and has faced the challenges of federal environmental approvals and the impact of climate change requirements on their initial planning. A coastal development that includes low, medium and high rise development, this masterplanned development reflects the new wave of development in the northwest corridor. There is much to learn from this tour of the fastest growing corridor in Perth.

MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITIES 2 (TOUR B)

Based in the heart of the Swan Valley, these two developments provide the major housing choices for the region. Both are award winning masterplanned developments and they present a broad range of lifestyle choices for the area. Ellenbrook is a mature development with an established community and facilities including a major retail centre. Boasting innovations in affordable living Ellenbrook is trialling medium and high density solutions in locations well outside of the norm for Perth. Vale is currently home to 1800 families which will grow to 4600 on completion. Much of the area is reserved for public open space including lakes, wetland conservation areas and bush forever. This tour shows what WA does best: large scale master-planned developments.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING (TOUR C)

The term “Transport Orientated Development” (TOD) sums up this study tour and provides a model for affordable living south of the city. An exciting experiment in density outside of the CBD, Cockburn Central is strategically located adjacent to Cockburn Central train station on the Perth to Mandurah rail line. The completed development will comprise a mixed-use activity centre and will include residential, retail and commercial uses. The award winning Stella Orion is an example of the modern affordable dwelling options that are being developed in the area. Whether you are into TOD or affordable development this highly informative tour will be of interest to you.

Oceanique is a luxury coastal apartment development with access to outstanding natural and recreational experiences including the amenities of Port Bouvard. Mandurah Ocean Marina has won a multitude of award for planning and design including two international awards in 2011. This integrated development has important lessons for developers and consultants alike.

URBAN RENEWAL (TOUR E)

Just in case you missed the press coverage, New Northbridge was the winner of the 2011 President’s Award at the UDIA National Awards for Excellence. This Urban Renewal project has taken on inner city Perth and turned it into an upmarket location that remains sensitive to its heritage. Urban renewal in Subiaco has resulted in 86% of the Subiaco Redevelopment Area completed and returned to the City of Subiaco with work at the Australian Fine China and the Centro North sites continuing. This study tour provides a fascinating insight into two highly successful urban renewal projects.

MIXED USE AND DENSITY (TOUR F)

The Peninsula Burswood, positioned to capture spectacular views over the Swan River, is a multi award winning development which will eventually become home to 3,000 residents accommodated in seven towers and adjoining townhouse development. Claremont Quarter opened in 2011 and demonstrates a very different approach to mixed use with 29,000sqm of retail floor space, 77 apartments and 600sqm of commercial space. Both projects are leaders in this growing market sector and this tour will be of keen interest to those with an interest in mixed use development.

CITY EVOLUTION WALKING TOUR (TOUR G)

On your feet everybody! This tour will exercise your mind and your body with an eclectic mix of inner city projects. 140 William Street is a recent addition to the Perth skyline and is distinctive not only in design but in ambition. Completed in 2011 the building has achieved outstanding energy efficiency and features 35,000 sqm of commercial and 6,500 sqm retail space. For a change of pace the Urban Orchard project has transformed a once neglected area on the rooftop of a car park into a vibrant meeting place that celebrates the importance of growing fresh, healthy food in an urban environment. Complementing other regeneration projects in the Perth Cultural Centre the Urban Orchard is not only a community project but took significant engineering work to complete. The City Link will become an iconic project in Perth. Comprising 13.5ha it will link the CBD and Northbridge for the first time in over 100 years by sinking the rail line and create space for public open space, and extensive retail, commercial and residential developments.

Located a few minutes to the south of Fremantle, Australand’s 85 hectare Port Coogee is an ambitious $2 billion dollar coastal development which blitzed the UDIA WA Awards for Excellence in 2011.
